Licensing as a Pharmacy Technician

In Rhode Island, there are two types of licensure for pharmacy technicians: Tech I and Tech II.

Tech I licenses can be obtained through a qualified training program, while Tech II licensure is obtained after passing a national certification exam, most commonly acquired through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Care New England's Pharmacy Technician Training Program enables students to obtain Tech I licensure, as well as prepares them to sit for their national certification exam upon completion of the program. Technicians who have achieved national certification have greater access to job opportunities, as many institutions require Tech II licensure for employment.

Student Testimonials

Sandra Suchite, Fall Cohort 2024
The pharmacy technician program at Kent Hospital was truly a blessing. I had such a narrow perspective on the pharmacy field. It limited my career choices, as I only thought that if you wanted to work in the medical field, a doctor, a PA, an NP, or a nurse was the only “successful” choice. However, in reality, pharmacies play a significant role in the community and hospital settings. Pharmacists and technicians are essential to the medical team. Whether it’s in a retail setting, assisting the community with their daily prescriptions, having that patient-centered care, and counseling, to pharmacists and techs that work in the hospital, getting crucial medications to nurses, pharmacists working closely with doctors, and techs making sure the hospital has all of the necessary medications in the nursing units, you make an impact and are apart of the interdisciplinary team. We are truly blessed to have these opportunities. Now, I am an aspiring future pharmacy student. This program opened my eyes to a whole new career I wasn’t aware of. I am truly grateful and proud to be a part of the pharmacy team.
James Gosselin, Summer Cohort 2025

When I first saw the newscast informing the public about the pharmacy tech training program I was immensely intrigued as I had had previous experience in the pharmacy world and had a great desire to know more so I reached out to Care New England directly. I soon received contact back from Inpatient Pharmacy Manager of Kent, Zachary and the Pharmacy Tech Training Program Instructor Emily.

I applied and was one of the selected few that were chosen for the program. This thirteen-week program was in-depth learning in a multifaceted educational experience that incorporated classroom, online modules, and of course hands on experience as well. After the 13-week training program I felt confident and more than well prepared for the pharmacy technician certification exam, which I passed thanks to the program instructor Emily's exemplary guidance and dedication to the success and future of her students. I Also after completing the summer long course, interviewed with the outpatient pharmacy here at Kent and I am now happily and gainfully employed as a pharmacy technician.

I was told of a further enrichment program that all of the pharmacy staff participate in called the ladder of success, with that I could plot my future with Care New England with the support of my fellow co-workers and the pharmacy management.

The pharmacy tech training program instilled confidence not only in myself, but in my pharmacy knowledge as well. I can't thank Zachary and Emily enough for all they've done, not just for myself but for my fellow classmates, which are now my fellow coworkers as well.

If I could sum up my experience in a phrase it would be this. Before this course I worked many jobs in many companies throughout my life, but it wasn't until I completed this course that I found and achieved something I never knew before, a career. For that I am forever grateful to Zachary, to Emily, to Kent Hospital, and above all Care New England.
Gricelda Orellana, Summer Cohort 2025

This program prepared me with in person lessons & hands on experiences to practice the many duties and positions this career can bring.

I started this program when my daughter was 5 months old, this training gave me the opportunity for immediate job placement and be able to be in a position that works along with my schedule.

Advancing my knowledge in the medical field and be able to assist pharmacists in impacting patient outcomes daily. Helping me gain knowledge in retail pharmacy, hospital setting pharmacy and mail-orders pharmacies opened a lot of positions for me in this field.

I learned pharmacology, laws, calculations, compounding, medication knowledge, and prescription processing. Along with expanding my costumer service confidence.

This program was helpful because I wanted to do more in the medical field then just being a receptionist, giving me the curriculum I needed to advance be successful and helpful in a pharmacy setting.

“Now I’m not just working in my career, I’m working for a future & it feels fundamentally better”
