Dr. Melissa Murphy provides colon and rectal surgery expertise for Care New England. As a board certified colon and rectal surgeon she works in a multidisciplinary approach providing comprehensive patient-centered care at Kent Hospital, Women and Infant’s Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Murphy offers a full range of colorectal clinical services with a focus on minimally invasive surgical techniques including laparoscopy, robotic surgery, sphincter preserving operations, and transanal minimally-invasive surgery.

Dr. Murphy received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Prior to matriculating in medical school, Dr Murphy received her Master of Public Health from Boston University. She completed her general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and her fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Murphy serves as Assistant Chief of Surgery for Kent Hospital. She focuses on improving patient care delivery, quality of care, and system processes to improve patient experience. She plays an active role in the education of students, residents, and fellows and holds clinical appointments with Harvard Medical School, Brown Medical School, and Johnson and Wales University.

Dr. Murphy has won awards including the H. Brownwell Wheeler Award for Outstanding Resident, and research awards from the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the New England Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Murphy has had the privilege of being named “Top Doc” in Colon and Rectal Surgery by RI Monthly for several years (2014-2018). She has published in peer-reviewed journals including Cancer, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Annals of Surgery.

Dr. Murphy’s clinical interests include caring for patients with colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), diverticular disease, anorectal disease (hemorrhoids, fissures, fistula disease), and bowel incontinence. Dr. Murphy works closely with gastroenterologists, gynecology oncologists, and urogynecologists at Women and Infant’s hospital to provide comprehensive women’s colorectal care here in Rhode Island.
