Every year, more than 400,000 people in the United States require an ostomy. This surgically created opening on the abdominal wall eliminates urine or solid waste from the body. Thanks to new advances in ostomy devices, follow-up care, and education, people with ostomies lead productive, active lives.
The Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center's, Ostomy Management Program has successfully cared for patients throughout Rhode Island. A certified ostomy nurse works with the patient before the ostomy is created. An appropriate ostomy appliance, available through Kent's Home Medical Equipment division, is chosen to meet the patient’s lifestyle needs. After surgery, the Center provides follow-up care to ensure protection of the ostomy site, manage any skin problems and help patients become comfortable with daily needs.
The Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center staff also communicates with the patient’s physician(s), and works with patients and family members in a support process to help each patient endure a dignified, active and rewarding lifestyle.
