About Outpatient Rehab

Located in the heart of central Rhode Island in East Greenwich, Kent Hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program, providing Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech and Swallowing (SLP) services.

Some of the areas we treat: Orthopedic injuries and surgical recovery, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, neurological impairments (Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, ALS, MS), amputations and prosthetics, vestibular issues, oncology (STAR-certified therapists).

We offer specialty programs in Stroke recovery, orthopedics, Parkinson’s Disease Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT), and lymphedema management.

Physical Therapy

Our experienced and licensed physical therapy staff have been providing one-on-one treatment to restore independent and productive lives for our patients since 1951. Our physical therapists evaluate and treat people of all ages who are physically disabled due to injury or illness that include, but are not limited to:Rehab

  • Sprains/strains (especially of the back, neck, ankle, and shoulders)
  • Orthopedic post operative repair
  • Fracture rehabilitation
  • Neurologic impairments (stroke, head injury, Parkinson's ALS, MS)
  • Arthritis
  • Prosthetic Training

Specializing in manual therapy and neuro-developmental treatment, our physical therapists service the continuum at Kent, from inpatient, to the rehabilitation center, to home care, to outpatient. Patients may enter and exit the continuum at any point, or may utilize all services if necessary.

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists aim to restore the skills necessary for people to lead independent and productive lives. Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity to achieve functional outcomes. The occupational therapists work to develop adaptive responses of individuals with disabilities in the areas of:

  • Arthritis
  • Neurologic impairments
  • Occupational injuries
  • Upper extremity orthopedic injuries (including fractures, tendonitis and hand trauma)
  • Burns
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Developmental disabilities

Occupational therapists service the continuum at Kent Hospital, from inpatient, to the rehabilitation center, to home care, to outpatient. Patients may enter and exit the continuum at any point, or may utilize all services, if necessary.

Speech-Language Pathology

Every day we rely on our ability to communicate with others. When that ability is compromised, there is significant impact on quality of life. Our speech-language pathologists specialize in disorders of communication, cognition, and swallowing, helping to regain the necessary skills to participate in daily living. Our speech and swallowing therapists specialize in the following:

  • Neurologic impairments (stroke, traumatic brain injury)
  • Dysphagia (swallowing disorders)
  • Voice disorders (including laryngectomy
  • LSVT LOUD, a Parkinson's disease-specific voice program
  • Fluency disorders
  • Progressive neurologic disorders (such as ALS, Parkinson's disease and MS)

Unique to this region, are our swallowing disorder (dysphagia) programs, including the following assessment and treatment modalities:

  • Modified Barium Swallow Studies
  • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
  • VitalStim® Therapyfor swallowing disorders

In conjunction with Barbara Guillette MD, a board certified otolaryngologist in the speech pathology department, our program offers Videostroboscopy evaluations, which enables the physician to view and identify vocal cord conditions which provide complete evaluation and treatment.

Unique to this region, are our swallowing disorder (dysphagia) programs, including the Modified Barium Swallow Studies, which provide complete evaluation and treatment.
