Dr. Blazar is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Fellowship trained in Spine Surgery at Boston’sNew England Baptist Hospital. Specializing in minimally invasive outpatient spine surgery, he also has over 30 years’ experience in adult inpatient deformity and reconstructive spine procedures from the neck to the low back. As the first spine surgeon in Rhode Island to implant an artificial disc, he has maintained his skills in the most advanced and evidence based treatments for diseases of the spine.
As a native Rhode Islander, he returned home in 1988 and began practicing at his long term and current location with the former Orthopedic Group, Inc. /Blackstone Orthopedics (in local dialect: “ the old Brodsky’s toy store, down the street from Greggs Restaurant ”). He strongly believes that surgery is rarely the answer, and is best saved for the patient who fails all conservative care. With advanced techniques in both diagnosis and treatment, he is able to care for the vast majority of spine ailments without the need for surgery. His practice philosophy is and has always been that a collaborative effort with a variety of practitioners works better then unilateral care from just one perspective.
He has assembled a team of spine care professionals who work collaboratively to incorporate a wide range of non-surgical services such as : Anesthesia pain management, non-narcotic medication trials, Chiropractic, acupuncture, neuromuscular massage therapy, functional rehabilitation and wellness behavioral intervention.
Committed to the community, he currently serves as a member of the RI Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, previously serving in many positions at the Miriam Hospital, culminating as the Medical Staff President. Most important to him, however, is his role parenting his 3 children . While winters with them are reserved for skiing and summers for boating, he enjoys multi-season gardening, outdoor cooking, and traveling with his family.
