Kent Hospital to Host Diabetes Awareness Day

Do you or a family member have diabetes? Do you have a child at risk for developing diabetes? Are you pregnant or plan to become pregnant and have diabetes? Do you routinely have your feet screened for complications related to diabetes? If you answered yes to any of these questions or have more questions related to diabetes and/or its diagnosis and management, then please join Kent Hospital as we kick off Diabetes Awareness Month and host our very first Diabetes Awareness Day.

The event will take place Saturday, November 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kent Hospital Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, located at 455 Toll Gate Road, in Warwick (Follow the signs for the main entrance, take a right after the emergency department, then take a left into first parking lot on left).

This event will mark the kickoff of the newest CNE Talks Health campaign, a Care New England (CNE) health and wellness awareness initiative. This campaign will include an enhanced web presence across the system on the topic of diabetes. CareNewEngland.org will host various informational videos featuring system experts discussing the latest treatments along with information on prevention and care once diagnosed with diabetes. CNE Talks Health showcases CNE as a system of care available to patients, referring clinicians and members of the community.

"This event is a great way for the community to come together and learn first hand about diabetes and its effects on everyday life," said Dr. George Perdrizet, medical director, Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Kent. "Whether or not you have diabetes yourself, or are at risk for diabetes, this free community event can guide you in the right direction and give insight on prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Kent Hospital treats all types of diabetics who may be dealing with diabetic wounds or ulcers and can provide a range of services to all diabetic patients."

Highlights of the day include screenings for the following: cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, diabetic foot and more. Also, flu shots will be available, so be sure to bring your insurance card.

Care New England physicians and other clinical experts from Kent, Women & Infants Hospitals, Butler, CNE Wellness Center and the VNA of Care New England will provide educational seminars on pre-diabetic risk factors, complications including neuropathy and ulcers, visual complications, nutrition, exercise, pregnancy and medication management. Vendors will be available to answer questions and provide information for you and your family. There will be plenty of free food and giveaways including free glucometers.

Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in their lifetime. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes now.
