Kent Hospital was honored recently at the Blue Wrap Blue Jean Ball, held at Roger Williams Park Casino in Providence. The hospital received the following three awards: Sustainable Operations award, Best Hospital Green Team and Achievement in Healthy Food award.
To qualify for these awards Kent had to show how it has reduced energy costs, how it is using safer materials/chemicals, reduced waste management, promoted environmental sustainability, participated in local food drives and provided healthier food, reducing its environmental footprint. Specifically, during the past year Kent has improved its recycling measures to 30 percent in 2014, saved approximately 2.4 million gallons of water with improvement to its refrigeration system, and has contributed more than 1,500 pounds of food to the RI Food Bank.
Kent Hospital, along with its Keeping It Green Committee, has worked to help reduce spending, waste and energy consumption in an effort to promote healthier communities. Kent is committed to a philosophy of environmental stewardship with operational practices that endeavor to protect environmental and human health. The award review committee consists of members from the RI Department of Environmental Management, Healthy Care without Harm and the City of Providence.
