Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Kent Hospital's cardiology patient support group, which focuses on individuals with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), will meet Monday, November, 4, 2013 from 6p.m.- 8p.m. The support group is open to all patients with ICDs in Rhode Island and their families. Dinner and refreshments will be provided. Advanced registration is encouraged.

Bruce A. Koplan MD, MPH, FACC, director of cardiac arrhythmia service at Kent Hospital and a member of Brigham and Women's Cardiovascular Associates at Kent will lead the meeting. The purpose of Kent's new cardiology patient support group is to educate patients with ICDs and their family members on coping with these devices. Topics to be discussed include: living with your device, managing your health, what to expect from your device, maintaining a dialogue with your healthcare providers, exercise and more.

This is an opportunity for patients with ICDs, and family members to ask Kent's professionals questions and to meet other patients and share their experiences. This support group will be held twice a year.
